Cumberland Smiles

Check out all that is happening with our online Family and Youth activities for August.

What is "Cumberland Smiles?"

Cumberland Smiles

Even though we cannot gather within our church building right now, we can still have fun together as a church family! "Cumberland Smiles" is a new online program at The Cumberland Church for our Family and Youth Ministries. Every month children and youth will receive a box with a few items inside that will help them complete challenges each week and focus on the theme for that month. Every week there will be a new challenge where you and your family can earn tokens to be used in a drawing at the end of every week for a small prize and another drawing at the end of the month for a BIG prize!

We miss seeing the children and youth at the church! We also miss being a part of your family's spiritual growth. In addition to the challenges, prizes, and boxes each month we are also offering Conversation Guides. It is important for God and faith to be a part of all young peoples daily lives. These conversation guides will give you and your family a starting point for discussion that revolves around God, helping to bring church home, and keeping God a constant topic around your house.

You can find the weekly challenges and conversation guides below!

Blowout Challenge (September 21-26

Items needed: Personal Cumberland Church candle and tape measure, masking tape or 4 items to use as markers, matches or a click lighter.

Create a starting point by placing your candle on the edge of a table/chair/counter/etc. Next, using your Cumberland Church measuring tape, measure out 1 foot and put down a piece of masking tape or one of your items to mark the distance. Repeat this process to measure 2 feet, 3 feet and 5 feet.

Conversation Guide - When, Where & What to Pray? September 21-26

It's easy to get caught up in wondering if there is a correct way to pray but all you have to do is speak. Simply, tell God what is on your heart by talking to Him. God cares for you and wants to hear from you.

When should you pray? Psalm 55:16-17 says, “But I will call upon the Lord to save me—and he will. I will pray morning, noon, and night, pleading aloud with God; and he will hear and answer.”

1 Thessalonians 5:17 says, “pray continually.”

You can pray anytime! God is always ready to talk to you and to hear from you!

Where should you pray? If we can pray anytime to God then we can assume we can pray anywhere we happen to be too! Ephesians 6:18 says, “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests…”

How convenient is that! God is always available to us no matter where we may be!

What should I pray for? The simple answer is anything and everything. You can use your “prayer chain” (included in your box) as a guide to know what to pray for.

We have also included several other prayer examples in your box too.

Discussion Questions:

1.  According to Psalm 55 when should you pray?

2.  Ephesians 6:18 say to pray on ________ occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.

3.  When is God available to hear your prayers?

4.  What you should you pray for?

5.  Try using one of the prayer examples or your “prayer chain” to have a prayer together.

Conversation Guide - Why Pray? (September 14-19)

Why pray? Because it makes our relationship with God stronger. Could you imagine trying to have a best friend without talking with them? How would you get to know them? It is the same with God too. To get to know God you have to talk to God.

It really is simple. God is so good and will help us when we are happy, sad, sick or even when we're in trouble. God will give us wisdom, strength and understanding if we only ask Him. In fact God is willing to give us many good things as long as we ask for them in accordance to His Will. God answers our prayers with signs, the Holy Spirit and His Word, the Bible. When we pray our relationship with God grows.

Read James 5:13-16 (The Prayer of Faith)

Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

Discussion Questions:

1. What is prayer?

2. Can you pray when you are in trouble?

3. Can you pray when you are happy?

4. What is another name for happy prayers?

5. What are some of the examples of why to pray mentioned in James 5:13-16?

6. What else can we pray for?

7. Is the prayer of a righteous man powerful? Is it effective?
