Psalm 51

What is Lent Anyway?

The following links are provided to help you explore the season of Lent and how it might be a valuable tradition for you to engage with this year.

"Wait a minute, I grew up here in the Bible Belt South and I have not ever heard of this strange stuff!"

I know, I know...there is no need to be concerned! This is one of the oldest tradition in all of Christian history. Even the Baptists are on board. See Lent for Baptists and First Baptist Church Goodlettsville

"Ok, how can I participate in Lent, you know, spiritually...I'm not sure about the fasting thing.."

That's Great!

A really good place to start in your fast (remember that could mean giving something up for the next 40 days..not including Sunday's..or taking something on something new for the Lenten season..) would be to take on a daily Lenten devotional activity. You know, you can be sure that each day you read some scripture, reflect on it, and then pray. These are some great online options for you to use this Lent.

Lenten Devotional from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary

Lenten Devotional from Luther Seminary

Lenten Devotional from Baylor University

We are also offering a Lenten Devotional Calendar specifically geared for families with young children.. We encourage you to read the daily devotionals together and engage in conversation with your family about them.  You can also opt in to receive it via email and/or text by texting the phrase: familylent to 84576. The calendars will be available at our Ash Wednesday Service (Feb 26 @ 6:30 pm) if you would like the hard copy (or ask Matt Tyler anytime matt@cumberlandchurch.com).

We hope that these resources help you along in your Lenten Journey. As always, if you have any questions, please let us know. Our ministry staff is available if you would like like discuss your Lenten experiences or to have prayer. If you haven't been to worship in a awhile, Lent is a great time to get back in the swing of things with your church family.

We hope to see you soon!
